Yes, you read it right! There is another snow wall in Japan, very close to the famous one in Teteyama Kurobe Alpine route. This one is called "Norikura Snow Wall".
Norikura Snow Walls(乗鞍の雪の壁)
The height of this snow wall in Nagano is a little bit shorter but the access is much more convenient. Similar to the Tateyama Alpine Route, you can see the snow only from end of April until end of June.
Getting here
Starting from Matsumoto JR station, take a train (kamikochi line) to Shin-shimashima station (30mins), and then change to a bus bound for Norikura Kanko Center (45mins). From Norikura Kanko Center, take the "Haruyama bus" to "Daisekkei/Kata no koya-guchi" (45mins). That's it! Only 2 transfers until you get to see the snow wall.
Transferring to the “Haruyama Bus"
The scenery along the way is no joke!
On sunny days, you’ll see many skiers here enjoying spring skiing.
If you have some time before catching the bus back down to Norikura Kanko Center, having a hot drink (400 yen) and oden (600 yen) at “Kuraigahara Sanso” might be a good idea.
Other menus include Udon/Soba (800 yen), Curry Rice (800 yen), Hot Drinks (400 yen), Draft Beer (500-600yen), Japanese Sake (400 yen) and more. This rest house also provides a reasonable accommodation staring from 4,500 yen.
