Looking for something to spice up your Instagram feed with theses quirky polka dots arts? Come visit Matsumoto and drop by Matsumoto City Museum of Arts for the world's biggest Yayoi Kusama exhibition ever.
This exhibition features total of 180 artworks by the 89-year-old avant-garde artist, Yayoi Kusama. (Admission fee 1,200 yen)
Although photography is prohibited for most parts of the exhibition, you're still allowed to snap photos with her unique and colorful artworks in the lobby, garden and some parts of the exhibition room.
This is the area where you are allowed to take photo (with no flash).
My favorite work from this exhibition is definitely the “Ladder to Heaven”. The piece involves with the concept of infinity, reflection, and repetition. It is a ladder-like object winded with fiber optic light. Above and below the ladder are placed with two large circular mirrors, creating an illusion that the endless ladder is leading us to either heaven or hell. Unfortunately, photography in this exhibition area is not allowed so I couldn’t get the photo for the blog. By the way, this is the piece I mean.
Another thing I love about this exhibition is that visitors can understand the artist's life better as the exhibition shows creations Kusama made starting from when she was just five years old, as well as while she spent her life in Kyoto and the United States, including representative works after she returned to Japan. Many works have never even been shown in Japan before.
Before ending this article, let me show you some funny and kawaii goods from the museum shop.
Normally, I rarely buy a souvenir but this Yayoi Kusama’s keychain is so funny that I had to bought two – one for me and another one is also for me. :D
This special exhibition will be held until July 22 (sun) this year. Don't miss it!
Next post, I'll show you Yayoi Kusama's inspired instagrammable food. Stay tuned!
